Server Downtime Print E-mail

We experienced some down time tonight between 10pm-11pm and 11:30pm-12:00am. The trouble was caused by a failing CPU fan on the server. The problem became an issue after a system update and reboot where the fan failed to spin up again.

As soon as it became obvious that the system was not going to return to service I ran out to Tomball (where the server is located) and found the trouble. I got the fan to spin up and the system to boot but had to return to my office to find a spare 1U Socket 478 CPU cooler. (Thankfully I had two spares, nobody that would sell such a device would possibly be open at this time of night.)

The lesson here is probably that I should keep a spare CPU fan on site. And, never update a server on Friday the 13th.
